Emergency Contraception

Is used soon after unprotected sexual intercourse or when your method of contraception has failed

It will stop an unwanted pregnancy.

You can get it from most pharmacies, your GP or your local sexual health clinic.

There are two types of emergency contraception

The morning after pill

This works by delaying ovulation and preventing implantation of an egg into the womb.

The coil - IUD

The IUD is a small plastic and copper coil that sits in the uterus.

This works by stopping eggs from being fertilized by sperm

It can be inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex.
